Graphite on paper

Dawn Wilson’s current work continues her exploration of historical images of a rapidly developing West Africa in the 20th century. For her most recent monochromatic drawings Dawn has focused on the fashions, youth cultures and night life of the Congolese capital of Kinshasa from the 1950’s onward.

Each of Dawn’s drawings exude confidence and personality while retaining the filmic quality of photography from this era. For Dawn this is achieved by incorporating a broad range of drawing materials including pencils, chalk, graphite sticks and charcoal powder to produce artworks with an intense sense of depth. Each drawing is developed over a number of weeks by revisiting different parts of each picture multiple times to bring the final composition into a balance of tone, texture and detail.
